A couple of years ago the concept of going on a juice cleanse still occurred to me as unnecessary and silly. I didn’t see the point in depriving myself of delicious food and shocking my body just to look slim for a couple of days and then to put on the weight just as quickly again. It wasn’t until my friend persuaded me to do join her on a juice cleanse for moral support that I came to realize that I was wrong all along. I agreed to do it to as I thought it wouldn’t hurt to give my liver and digestive system a break, to boost my body with some essential vitamins, minerals and to balance my hormones.

After a long and hungry first day with a loud and angry belly screaming for food I was having second thoughts about my decision, however, I woke up on the second day feeling surprisingly amazing. I became aware that the cleanse was absolutely not only about losing weight or getting rid of toxins, which if anything are pleasant side-effects,  but being on the juice cleanse was as if a deep fog dissipated and allowed my inner hippie child to surface. My focus from the physical things around me transferred to my thoughts and feelings. I gained more spiritual clarity and my attention was drawn to the ‘now’. I became present, and I was what I am. I really felt like my whole self.

I became aware of the influence and effect of the food we put into our bodies, the surroundings and daily tasks we lose ourselves in, and cyberspace that clogs our minds. During the depths of my cleanse, I felt as if food and my daily habits were an outright obstacle to seeing what was always there right inside of me. Don’t get me wrong, I am obviously not promoting to abstain from eating. I truly believe food is performance and skipping meals is a definite no if you want to function 100%, but doing a proper cleanse every 3 months for 4 days, can be a very rewarding experience as I have fortunately had the pleasure to discover.

In only three days my body felt leaner, my skin looked more radiant, but the best of all and what surprised me the most was that my mind became so much clearer. The juice cleanse renewed my spirit and it brought me into a higher state of consciousness. Meditating seemed easier than ever and I managed to clear my mind from any external influences. I had no interest to check my phone every 5 minutes for emails or to see what was going on, on social media. The cleanse gave me moments of intense bliss, removing the fog that our daily lives in the chaos of our modern world have brought upon our minds. I recommend, whilst doing the cleanse, to be in solitude as much as possible, as it demands us to face ourselves fully and allow the spiritual awakening to happen.

Allowing yourself to create this space to just ‘be’, enables you to see the real gaps and cracks that you unconsciously have been filling up with people, actions and food.

The cleanse opened my eyes to how little time I spend in the present, how most of us only focus on tomorrow or even on the past. It forced me to discover more about myself, as the answers to what we want, or what we should be dinged not lie externally but are just right inside of us waiting to be revealed.

…as the answers to what we want, or what we should be dinged not lie externally but are just right inside of us waiting to be revealed.

For centuries, fasting has been used by monks and Buddhists to obtain mystical revelations and awakenings. Fasting is seen as a gateway to finding solutions to any kind of problem. So the next time you are planning to do a juice cleanse to lose a few pounds for your next holiday or for your sexy bodycon, keep in mind that you can have a surprising awakening moment that overshadows all other effects of the cleanse. Overshadow is the wrong word, as it really is the exact opposite, it is as if the cleanse is the sun and the awakening moment is when the fog that is in your mind clears.

The next stage for me will be doing a juice cleanse in a beautiful retreat, to dissolve all barriers between me and nature.
