There is a depth in the uncomfortable moments of our lives that when acknowledged they allows us to see where we are now and where we desire to go. The tools of transformation are within us all. So, what if we decided to allow these uncomfortable moments, feelings, experiences to flow from us with ease, in an environment that is dedicated to fostering peace, inner-beauty and growth? Sacred Space NY founder Shelley Lewis shares with us her story on how this sacred oasis/ unique healing pod in the New York City came to be. Ssanyu Birigwa talks with Shelley Lewis in this exclusive interview.
Is there a significant experience that moved you to start SSNY?
I have been a long-time meditation and mindfulness practitioner and this ancient culture of knowing that promotes stillness and finding quiet within is something that has profoundly influenced my own journey. But the experience that really coined the idea in me was whilst I was volunteering for a private foundation and on a site visit to an orphanage in Bangladesh. The facility was wonderfully ran by a team of caring aids and the babies had their basic needs well taken care of but my one overarching memory was how my simple act of holding these infants brought an elated smile to their faces. The slightest touch, my most tender glance moved them deeply. What the babies we really starving for was love and connection – basic human attention. My cradling and presence had such an impact on their wellbeing. This was the birth of Sacred Space NY; a global luxe healing brand designed to ‘give back.’
Share with us one word that expresses the spirit of what SSNY represents to you?
How do you envision SSNY affecting the Wellness and Health community here in NYC and beyond?
In New York we’re obsessed with external appearances and status. I created Sacred Space NY to deliver a brand that focuses entirely on Defining Inner Beauty. Sacred Space NY really represents a way of life. Our aim is to blend the business of beauty and the world of philanthropy and create an all inspired lifestyle choice for our wellness clients. Sacred Space NY really represents a way of life. Our aim is to blend the business of beauty and the world of philanthropy and create an all inspired lifestyle choice for our wellness clients. I’m looking at the tools and techniques I can deliver that provide antidotes to stressful living. If used well technology can streamline our lives in a great way, but an overzealous consumption of news and media has the opposite effect. Our tag line is “Stop the Tweet and Reconnect.” I personally relish the moments when I can step out of the city and sip in the quiet of country life. At Sacred Space NY we’ve created an environment to help clients truly rejuvenate. Whether it is a 30 minute guided healing mediation or a 75 minute session of Nuad Boram (Thai Yoga on the mat), we’re here to help New Yorker’s de-stress and reconnect.
What is the philosophy behind SSNY?
The Healing Pod is designed to help us find quiet, because in this space we have the ability to truly tap into who we are, what we want and how we can accomplish that. When we sit in stillness we find an extraordinary sweetness can arise that comes from nothing other than simply being, and from that place the qualities of gratitude and joy are more easily born and in my opinion to be in good health means to have and experience both those qualities every day. Finding Sacred Space within allows us our own sacred moment out of clockwork time for private healing and rebirth.
Fill in the blank:
Just for today…… You don’t have to be perfect to be infinitely lovable.
Mood of the moment: I don’t have to be perfect to be infinitely lovable.
